Meryl Streep and Don Gummer separate after 45 years of marriage

Oscar winner Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer surprised the world by announcing their separation after 45 years of marriage. The 74-year-old actress and the 76-year-old sculptor revealed that they secretly separated six years ago and have chosen to live separate lives.

In an exclusive statement to Page Six, a spokesperson for the Hollywood star said: “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for over six years and, while they will always look out for each other, they have chosen separate lives.”

The news caused a great impact in the world of entertainment, since Streep and Gummer were considered one of the most solid and discreet couples in the industry. The last time they were seen together was at the 2018 Oscars,1 where Streep was nominated for her role in The Pentagon Files.

The couple met in the late '70s, when Streep was going through a difficult time after the death of her boyfriend John Cazale, actor of The Godfather, from lung cancer. Gummer was the brother of Streep's friend and offered her support and comfort. Six months later, they were married in an intimate ceremony in the garden of Streep's parents' home.

Together they formed a large family with four children: Henry Wolfe, a 43-year-old singer and songwriter; Mamie Gummer, 40-year-old actress; Grace Gummer, 37-year-old actress; and Louisa Jacobson, a 30-year-old actress. They also have five grandchildren.

Streep and Gummer lived for many years in a house in Connecticut, where they raised their children away from the media spotlight. They later bought a loft in Manhattan, which they sold a few years ago for more than $15 million.

Streep is one of the most acclaimed and awarded actresses in film history, with three Oscars and 21 nominations. She has starred in films such as Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa, The Devil Wears Prada and Mamma Mia. Last Friday she received the 2023 Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts for her artistic career.

Gummer is a renowned sculptor who has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums. His style is characterized by the use of materials such as metal, wood or glass to create geometric and abstract shapes.

The couple has not revealed the reasons for their separation or details about the distribution of their assets or custody of their grandchildren. It is also not known if they have plans to rebuild their lives with other people or if they maintain a good relationship.
