Highlights Dustin Poirier-Conor McGregor

The Irishman Conor McGregor lost on Saturday night to American Dustin Poirier after suffering a serious left leg injury at the start of the match in Las Vegas (Nevada).

This five-round fight was supposed to resolve the tie between McGregor, a two-tier former UFC champion, and his rival Poirier. The third episode of the rivalry between McGregor and Poirier was stopped at the end of the first round after a bloody McGregor missed a punch and, taking a step back, twisted his leg in a shocking manner.

Poirier pounced on the sore McGregor with a series of punches and elbows until the Irishman was saved by the bell in the octagon of the T-Mobile Arena.

"This guy was saying he was going to kill me and kill me. He was going to leave here in a coffin, "Poirier recalled, who was declared the winner by technical knockout. "You don’t talk to people like that. I hope this guy gets home safe with his beautiful family".

Promoters later said McGregor suffered the lower tibia injury and was expected to undergo surgery this Sunday. The judges had 10-8 for Poirier before the arrest, the UFC Twitter account later reported.

In an interview inside the octagon while waiting for him to be removed on a stretcher, McGregor claimed he was winning the fight when the accident occurred. "He was boxing his bleeding head, kicking his bleeding leg. This is not over, "said McGregor, who has only achieved one victory in the past four and a half years.

In 2014, McGregor knocked out Poirier in less than two minutes and last January the American took a rematch with a knockout in the second round. For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic a full capacity was allowed for a UFC combat in Las Vegas.

Poirier’s balance reached 28 wins and 6 losses while McGregor’s was down to 22-6. UFC President Dana White said he hoped there would be a fourth fight between the two. "You can’t let a fight end like this," he said.

According to ESPN reporter Mike Coppinger, the UFC head of staff would have told that TV network that McGregor will have a rematch with Poirier after he has healed from the injury, "which could take a while".
